We finally decided to play a major game of Warhammer, so I figured I might as well blog it. Some things to know beforehand: We’re both trying out units that we don’t have models for as we’d like to get a feel for them before purchasing/converting the models. So on the Skaven side, the warpfire thrower is being used as a Poisoned Wind Mortar, and the Vermin Lord is being used as my Warlord riding on the back of a Rat Ogre Bonebreaker.
On the Dwarf side, the unpainted cannon is being used as a flame cannon, the bolt thrower is being used as a grudge thrower, the regiment of slayers is being used as a regiment of longbeards, the regiment of rangers/hammerers are being used as a regiment of ironbreakers and the lone hammerer is being used as a Thane. Also note that the cheerleader and pony with carriage are simply there for decoration and are not part of the game in any way.
We decided to be a little more creative this time and came up with names for our heroes:
Dwarves:
- Thane Jimothy
- Lord Frankfurter
- Dragon Slayer Bob
- Master Engineer Hank
Skaven:
- Warlord Squeak-Squeak
- Assassin Sneak-Stab
- Deathmaster Snikch (as per rulebook)

Note that all pictures were taken at the end of each turn, after movement and combat were completed.
Turn 1 - Skaven
Not a whole lot happened this turn, I moved my army forward and began shooting. My Warp-Lightning Cannon shot way off the board (I’m terrible at guess ranges) and my ratling guns moved which meant they couldn’t shoot. Fortunately, my poisoned wind mortar managed to make a shot, but I rolled a misfire. A quick roll on the misfire chart showed the first major flaw in the unit…my opponent was able to move the template 3D6 inches from where it would have landed to anywhere she wanted. She placed it right on top of my rat ogres, but rolled a big pile of 1s and 2s. Lucky me!
The biggest fear I had going into this game was that my doomwheel shoots lightning at the nearest unit (friend or foe) every turn. As my clanrats were the closest unit to the wheel, I attempted a leadership test to try and contain the lightning from firing. I was successful, but just barely.
No wounds inflicted this turn.

Turn 1 - Dwarves
As expected, the Dwarves didn’t move an inch…stubborn bastards just stood there waiting. The shooting phase was the scary part since the Dwarf army is of a very shooty nature. Thankfully, all of the war machines managed to miss the oncoming horde of rats. The thunderers however, managed to kill 5 clanrats in one unit, and the quarrellers took out a single clanrat in the other unit.
A total of 6 wounds inflicted by the Dwarf scum this turn.

Turn 2 - Skaven
My unit of gutter runners apparently got lost and didn’t show up this turn.
Now things get more interesting as the rats are within killing range. It was a horrible start in the movement phase as my Doomwheel stopped an inch away from the regiment of Longbeards, and my unit of clanrats failed their charge at the Ironbreakers. I decided to go straight for the characters and charged Thane Jimothy with Warlord Squeak-Squeak riding on his Rat Ogre Bonebreaker, and charged Lord Frankfurter with my unit of Rat Ogres.
The shooting phase was not so bad. I managed to kill 2 quarrelers with my mortar, 2 thunderers with my warp-lightning cannon, and 2 longbeards with one of my ratling guns. The other ratling gun misfired and rolled a “spins wildly”, and shot off of the board.
Close Combat was just brutal as Lord Frankfurter slaughtered 2 rat ogres, and the ogres didn’t manage a single wound on him. Despite my whopping 10 attacks on Thane Jimothy, no wounds were inflicted on either side. Thankfully, my rat ogres were being brave and passed their panic test.
Skaven team inflicted 6 wounds, Dwarves inflicted 6 wounds.

Turn 2 - Dwarves
Following suit with my Gutter Runners, the miners didn’t show up this turn.
Obviously the damn longbeards charged my doomwheel, Dragon Slayer Bob decided he might as well do the same. So much for impact hits…
The Dwarf Warriors decided to join Lord Frankfurter and charged my rat ogres, and the unit of ironbreakers went after my clanrats. Since when do Dwarves ever get to charge anything?
The shooting phase was a little more deadly this time. The cannon took out a single Plague Censer Bearer, the Grudge Thrower shot at the plague censer bearers as well but missed. The Organ Gun shot up 5 of my plague monks, and the flame cannon torched 8 more. The Thunderers shot and killed 2 of my Stormvermin, and the Quarrelers killed another clanrat. I hate Dwarves.
Close combat was another slaughterfest. The longbeards managed a single wound on my doomwheel, but the doomwheel retaliated and killed 3 of them. Lord Frankfurter continued his onslaught and butchered another 4 wounds worth of my rat ogres, and the charging warriors put on another 3 wounds, causing the rat ogres to run away. The warriors pursued but couldn’t catch up to the speedy rats. The Lord withheld pursuit as he was itching to kill Squeak-Squeak. Thane Jimothy inflicted a single wound on Warlord Squeak-Squeak’s mount, and again the warlord and his mount hurt absolutely nothing.
Combat between the ironbreakers and clanrats got interesting as Assassin Sneak-Stab jumped out of hiding. Though the ironbreakers only inflicted 1 wound on the clanrats and Sneak-Stab killed a single ironbreaker.
Dwarves inflicted 27 wounds, Skaven inflict 4.

Turn 3 - Skaven
Huzzah! The Gutter Runners decided to show their faces and pop up beside the hill, ready to kill some war machines!
Not much happened in the movement phase aside from my plague censer bearers charging the warriors, clanrats moving around my doomwheel and the stormvermin preparing to set up a flanking attack.
Shooting phase was pathetic, both ratling guns missed their targets and the mortar managed to kill one flame cannon crew member. My Warp-lightning cannon hit the flame cannon itself but didn’t wound it.
Surprisingly enough, my plague censer bearers managed to gas and kill 2 warriors, and slaughter 7 warriors with their attacks. Apparently hatred + frenzy + flails makes for a good time. The warriors fought back and managed to kill one censer bearer. Doomwheel’s turn, killed a single longbeard with the grinding attack, crew attacks Dragon Slayer Bob and misses completely. Dragon Slayer Bob is a loser and fights back…inflicts a single hit, wounds with that hit…then apparently I’m told that he does D6 wounds. A 6 is rolled and the Doomwheel is destroyed. I hate Dwarves.
My clanrats and Assassin Sneak-Stab kill 2 ironbreakers, and the ironbreakers kill 2 clanrats. Thane Jimothy puts another 2 wounds on my Warlord’s mount and for the third time in a row, Warlord Squeak-Squeak and his mount do absolutely nothing.
Skaven inflicted 14 wounds, dwarves inflict 9.

Turn 3 - Dwarves
Once again, the miners don’t show up again! With any luck they’ll just stay off the board for the entire game.
Now that the doomwheel is dead, the longbeards charge my clanrats’ flank, and Dragon Slayer Bob decides to run over towards my ranged units.
A lucky cannon shot blows away the remaining rat ogre and packmasters this turn. the Grudge Thrower misfires and can’t shoot this turn. The stupid flame cannon “fires” at my stormvermin and torches 10 of them (it hit 15). The stormvermin panic, and run away. Best part about this phase is that the organ gun misfires and blows itself to smithereens. In an attempt to finish off what’s left of my plague monks, the thunderers shoot and kill 3 of them, and the quarrelers kill another. The remaining 3 plague monks panic and run away.
The longbeards attacking the flank take out 2 clanrats and the retaliation proves useless. The Plague Censer Bearers manage to gas another 4 warriors to death and the warriors take out another 2 of my rats.
Lord Frankfurter who obviously charged Warlord Squeak-Squeak manages to kill him with relative ease. The rat ogre bonebreaker takes a monstrosity test for losing his rider and enrages. The rat ogre directs his 5 attacks to Thane Jimothy and mauls him to death. A nice turn of events for 3 rounds of nothing.
The clanrats kill a single ironbreaker and Assassin Sneak-Stab kills 2 more with his poisoned attacks. The ironbreakers didn’t kill a single rat this turn.
Dwarves inflicted 25 wounds, Skaven inflict 11.

To be continued…
